University of Wisconsin-Madison reclaims No. 1 spot on the Peace Corps’ annual Top Schools rankings

27_lauralindePeace Corps volunteer and UW-Madison graduate Laura Linde hopes to work for a nongovernmental organization and promote improved environmental practices internationally after she completes her Peace Corps service this year.

The Peace Corps announced that the University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked No. 1 among large schools on the agency’s 2017 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list. There are 87 Badgers currently volunteering worldwide.

University of Wisconsin – Madison leads Volunteers to Peace Corps Agriculture

Joining the Peace Corps was a natural next step for Rita Argus and Daniel Stevenson after they earned their degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Whether it was through study abroad programs or in-the-field agriculture experiences, the students found their inspiration through different facets within the institution.

But their Wisconsin values were a constant.

Milwaukee Resident Begins Peace Corps Service in Costa Rica

Theresa Kedinger, 29, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Costa Rica on February 20 to begin training as a community economic development volunteer. Kedinger will work at the community level to build one-on-one relationships with women, youth, and potential entrepreneurs. She will advise business, marketing, financial management, and product design plans, in addition to teaching literacy programs and facilitating business workshops.

“My mother got my sisters and I involved in volunteering at a very young age, and I have always enjoyed the experiences that each has offered,” Kedinger said. “Each encounter, whether it be with an organization itself, the people who work there, or the population that they are serving, has had an impact on who I am today. Dana Schmidt, 28, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Namibia on August 18 to begin training as a science education Volunteer. Schmidt will work at the community level to teach in classrooms with limited resources at the primary, middle and high school level. Schmidt will also work to engage her students and community members in extracurricular activities.

“I was delighted when I got the invitation to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer,” Schmidt said. “I’m ecstatic to be given the opportunity to check off one of my life long goals. The motivation to join the Peace Corps started in high school when a Peace Corps recruiter had a booth with information. Jonathan Bieschke, 23, of Antioch, Illinois, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Sierra Leone on August 3 to begin training as a secondary education English teacher. This program is the first to re-enter Sierra Leone after Peace Corps suspended its programs due to the Ebola outbreak. As an education volunteer, Bieschke will work at the community level to teach English to students in seventh through 10th grade. He will empower youth to live healthy, productive and active lives by improving extra-curricular activities and life skills classes.

UW- Eau Claire announces new Peace Corps Prep Program

The Peace Corps and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have announced a new partnership that will offer students a unique combination of undergraduate coursework and community service that prepares them for an international career.
