Why did you apply to the Peace Corps?
I joined the Peace Corps largely because I wanted to share my skills while traveling. With my background in anthropology I had an appreciation for diverse cultures but had yet to gain first-hand experience living and working abroad. Le Mars, Iowa, resident begins Peace Corps service in Colombia

Sarah Gengler, 23, of Le Mars, Iowa, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Colombia August 27 to begin training as an English education volunteer. Gengler will make a difference teaching conversational and content-based English in middle and high schools.

“I’ve had a very privileged life and have always felt a need to contribute to improving the world,” Gengler said. “The Peace Corps has always seemed a good option for offering support to others in the world.”

Gengler is the daughter of Paul and Denise Gengler and a 2008 graduate of Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars. She graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in social justice and conflict studies in 2012.
