Illinois resident brings psychology background to Peace Corps Fiji

Pennock.Madeleine_FijiMadeleine Pennock, 27, of Centralia, Ill., has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Fiji Sept. 2 to begin training as a health extension volunteer. Pennock will live and work at the community level to make a difference raising awareness about the need for health education through a variety of activities, such as identifying local leaders to teach families about maternal and child health and organizing trainings on nutrition, sanitation and oral re-hydration therapy.

“I have aspired to join the Peace Corps ever since I was a little girl,” she said. “I was motivated to join because of my desire to help people who are less fortunate than me. I am also excited to be able to travel to places I may never get to travel to otherwise. Belleville, Ill., resident begins Peace Corps service in Botswana

Cheri Vitez, 59, of Belleville, Ill., has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Botswana Aug. 6 to begin training as a community and economic development volunteer. Vitez will live and work at the community level and make a difference working with non-government organizations and community-based organizations as a capacity builder for the health and HIV/AIDS programs.

“I believe that to answer the call to service is one of the greatest expressions of our humanity,” she said. “I am proud to be carrying on the legacy of John F. Peace Corps offers Latina volunteer professional and educational opportunities upon return to U.S.

Through Peace Corps, Judy Torres has made a difference as a volunteer in the Dominican Republic, received financial assistance to attend graduate school, and launched a career with the federal government — and her journey all started with a late-night TV announcement in her college dorm at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

“When I was a freshman, I saw a public-service announcement for Peace Corps that said ‘Life is calling, how far will you go?,’ and I remember asking myself, ‘How far would I go?’ Then during my senior year, a Peace Corps recruiter came to campus. O’Fallon, Ill., resident begins Peace Corps service in Zambia

Krohn, 24, of O’Fallon, Ill., has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Zambia Feb. 11 to begin training as an agriculture and sustainability volunteer. Krohn will make a difference by helping local farmers and agriculture specialists develop more sustainable programs to feed the community while minimizing negative environmental impact.

“I have been interested in the Peace Corps ever since high school, and as I continued through college, it became more of a realistic option post graduation,” said Krohn, who previously worked with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service. “Also, the large need for environmental and resource-based volunteers really struck home as a project area I would like to work in.”

Krohn is the son of Jim Krohn and Donna Thro and a 2006 graduate of O’Fallon Township High School in O’Fallon, Ill. He earned his bachelor’s degree in forestry and natural resource management from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., in 2012.
